lausocial poster spring 2011

lausocial poster spring 2011

new semester, new #lausocial sessions.

we have a series of guest speakers lined up for this semester with themes that go together with today’s changing digital environment.

the media landscape at the moment has a lot of energy about the role it is playing in the political unrest in the middle east (for egypt and other countries).

facebook places is still not available in Lebanon for now, so the Location Based Services chapter will continue to focus around foursquare and gowalla.

group buying is something we will add this semester especially with the 13+ group buying clones of groupon.com that are playing this role in the middle east.

overall it is an exciting time.  let the social media ripples begin !

the students of the Digital Media course, lausocial, have explored their surrounding environments to see how digital media is affecting their day-to-day lives.

the exploration was done across different age groups, educational backgrounds, social circles, Internet literacy level,…

all videos have english subtitles.

(that is it for the fall semester of lausocial.com. will be back in a few weeks for the beginning of the spring semester.  see you then.)

the Fall semester is nearing its end and the students have been generating content on a regular basis.  the content can be found here:

octavia nasr speaks at LAU on november 9th at noon.
she is well respected in the region and a lot of people are interested to hear her talk from the region as well as internationally.
for that purpose, #lausocial setup a dedicated live event coverage engine to live tweet, live blog, share live pics,…right from the heart of the event.
it has been setup in a way to allow students to contribute content as well as members of the online community participating in the event.
moreover, there will be video recordings of the event that will be shared a few days later after the editing is done.
to keep track of the action, head over to:

we dove headfirst into blogging and tweeting and have been active regularly over the last three weeks.  we covered the concepts, the basics, the platforms, the why, the how, the when,…blogged regularly, tweeted actively, and are pretty excited about where all of this is heading.

to stay more up-to-date with how the class is going, do peak at:

  • get updates via email.  subscribe! (top-right)

  • lausocial netvibes page aggregates all the class blog posts, comments on blog posts, class tweets, and other links of interest

  • lausocial wiki that holds information about class content and material covered in class, student blogs and twitter accounts, assignments, tips and links, student twitter list,…

we would love to connect with you on any of the ways just mentioned.

so feel free to comment, tweet, DM, @reply, or email us with any questions and concerns !

the media landscape of the 20th century had the gutenberg press, two-way communication (telegraph, telephone), recorded media (sound, pictures, video), and sound and video signals broadcast through the air in the form of radio and tv.

in the 21st century the media landscape has changed dramatically with the Internet as a unified medium for all communication. the content generation cycle has shifted. user interaction has been completely redefined.  the long standing tried-and-true business models have collapsed.

as the media moguls of the 20th century struggle to evolve, the educational system needs to play a crucial role in empowering  a generation that will eventually become the driving force behind the changes of the media landscape.

for the first time in the middle east, a class in new media aimed towards communication arts students (journalism, radio, tv, film, and theater) is being offered at the Lebanese American University.

what better way to start the course than having the online community choose the name of the course ?

we crowdsourced the domain name and the hashtag of the course and had the twitterverse, our facebook friends, and members of the classroom collectively select their choice.

the result is www.lausocial.com and a twitter hashtag of #lausocial

vote process and results were as follows,

let the media landscape redefinition begin…with lausocial.com….
